applying transitions - edits

Hey folks, need help with this one...

Quick question about applying transitions. When I bring up the transitions window in the bottom left of the screen, highlight the effect I want use, and then attempt to "drag" it onto the timeline, all I see is a black circle with a line through it where the cursor would normally be and it won't allow me to apply the transition. Not sure why this happens (?)

Also, when I "highlight" a certain section of footage on the timeline and attempt to "delete" that section (much the way I do with audio in SF 6.0) seems it won't let me do that either. The "backdrop" of the footage is highlighted a sort of purple color, but after I hit the Delete key, the footage remains on the timeline. Any suggestions for doing this "cut" or "edit"? Would appreciate any insight. I'm sure there's a simple solution to these, but I'm kind of a newbie to VV3 :>)

Hi jbfyipi,

You might try overlapping your clips to create a crossfade, then drop the transition onto the crossfade.

To delete using the loop selector, you might try clicking on the event(s) you want to cut, drag the loop selector, then cut, or delete, or copy.

Thanks for the quick response martyh!

I'll certainly give those tips a try this weekend. I assume that with "automatic crossfades" once you overlap two clips this will occur automatically. Would the same happen if you left a space between the two clips?

Also on an unrelated note, if I'm ultimately going to create a DVD production should I CAPTURE the video as MPEG2 (rather than the standard AVI - NTSC DV)or can I encode it to MPEG2 later in the process? I use the Canopus ADVC-100, I just bought the Pioneer DVR-104 with the Record Now Max, Veritas DLA, and DVDit SE 2.5.2 authoring software bundle. I would be using VV3 for the capture of course. Would appreciate any capture advice if my project is ultimately going to DVD. Thanks a bunch. JBFYIPI

Hi, JBFYIPI,

Clips usually need to overlap to transition between the two... you can apply a transition to standalone events by dropping the transition to the head or tail of an event, but that might not work well for some transitions.

If you capture using Vegas, you'll be capturing DV avi. If you will be editing the footage, avi should be better than MPEG anyway. Vegas can encode, and your DVD apps can too. There is great info on DVD production in this forum found by the search feature, and the DVD afficionados are very happy to share..
