Archiving from HD Cam?

Jaums wrote on 1/29/2010, 9:58 AM
I just got a Sony Handicam HDR-XR500V which records to a harddrive.

I want to off load the clips {files}, delete them from the cam & store them until I'm ready to edit the project in Vegas.

I figure to use the Sony software that came with the cam to burn them onto DVD disks [as individual files, not as a "playable' DVD].

Then, when ready to edit the project, load the files from the disks to the PC.

Sound like the best plan?

Thanks!

Sounds like a good plan.

The only suggestion I have is to use good quality DVDs.
Also, burn at a slower rate to get better burns. This may be just mojo but I've been burning all my DVDs and CDs usually at half the max burn rate my burner selects and never get coasters, (Touch Wood) (:

Hmmm, interesting point on the burn rate, I usually let DvdArdhitect default that and I notice it changes. I recently burned 20 Dvds and about five have some of the block pixelation. Usually all around the same time in the video?

I don't really know where to start in troubleshooting this but I think I'll start buy reducing the burn rate and see what happens.

Btw, I just checked and you can set the minimum burn rate but not the max at whcih you would like to burn, so I guess you have to overide it each time you burn a dvd, odd.

- I tend to scratch DVDs so I wouldn't burn to DVD at all.
Instead I would buy a decent HardDrive or HardDrives to store the media on.
When you're ready to edit, you just plug it in and start your edit using the HD(s).

As cheap as HD's are these days (depending on your budget) you could RAID/mirror them for ultimate backup/security.

By the time you'd need to UpGrade the Size(s) of your HD's they will probably be even cheaper.

Jaums - I also have an XR500V camera. Love it. I'm not sure which quality you are recording at but if at the highest quality DVD's will not give you much time per DVD (like 40 min?) . I use a drive caddy and just plug in 1TB drives to download video and later I can use the same drive to do the edit and easily back it up prior to the edit. Your camera has 120gig drive -- if it was full when you download, that's like 25 DVD's ?

Actually I think it's almost as cheap (per gig) and certainly easier and faster than DVD's and I trust it more and it is certainly much much easier to keep organized (and add media to the project folder) as you keep downloading video for storage.
