Are DVD's interlaced?

I have a couple of questions concerning the following:

If I choose the "PAL DV (720x576, 25.000 fps)" template I notice that by default it's interlaced ( lower field) but I can change it to progressive.

1) Do the DVD players or TV screens de-interlace it when playing?
2) If I copy the VOB file from the DVD and rename it MPG will it be interlaced.
3) If I change the "field order" in the template to progressive will the DVD player still play it?

Your Canon SF20 shoots interlaced. If that is your source, then don't change anything to progressive. The DVD will be created as an interlaced DVD. This is the default for PAL 25 fps and NTSC 29.97 fps.

My strong advice is this: unless you have a lot of experience in doing interlaced to progressive conversions, don't ever change any of the interlaced defaults in rendering templates. Also, resist the temptation to change the "deinterlace" setting in the project properties from the default of "blend" or "interpolate."

I wish I had a dollar (or Euro) for every time I've had to say this: progressive is not better than interlaced.

All old TV sets require interlaced, and all modern TV sets do a fine job of displaying it.

The DVD format does allow for 23.98 progressive. I don't know if it allows for 29.97/25fps progressive. In either case, it doesn't really matter. You're best off making an interlaced DVD.

The Render As settings override your project settings when it comes to rendering. The project settings determine what you see in the video preview window.
Usually you're best off not mucking around with the Render As settings. Use the canned settings that come with Vegas.
