Well, you can change the order of the clips based on a number criteria: alpha-numeric based on name, date, type, etc.

But, no, you can't really drag them into any order.

Although if you gather your clips with the Slideshow tool, you can drag them into any order there.

Thanks for your reply. I'll try the slideshow tool.

Unfortunately, slideshow is only for pictures, not clips...

the lack of a storyboard tool in vegas family is an old sorrow for me.. I bought Vegas pro several years ago, a very fine piece of software indeed but i could not fuction whithout a basic storyboard utility, used for a primary story construction. I moved to Premiere, i didn't really like it, i worked a year or two with this and then I had to move to other fields for some years. I bought today VMS 11 to make some family films and teach my little daughters editing. Guess what : the storyboard is still absent! Despite the fact that is present in almost every editing program now! I thought that there must be a deep aversion in Sony for the SB..and then I visualized the Sony's MovieZ presentation on this site, and a fine SB utility is included in this basic program!! Why the Vegas users are punished?? I don't need MoviEZ, i want to work with Vegas 10, the program I like (i use it since ed. 3.0 and I paid for 4 upgrades since then) and Movie studio. VMS would be unbeatable with a storyboard tool. Am i asking too much??

Windows MovieMaker Live is terrific, if you just want to edit in a basic storyboard interface.

But I think most of us much prefer the power of a professional, timeline-style interface.

ok, but the "basic storyboard interface" is the first level and then i have to continue with all the rest of editing which is not possible with Movie Maker. I cannot open a basic MM project in VMS and besides I want to work in just one program.

I agree with you on this. I have to use the empty space further up the timelines to rearrange clips then shunt them back. It would be a lot easier with a storyboard/work area.

This isn't terribly elegant, but i've done it this way with great success ...

In the media bin (or in explorer view, which is my preference), i rename all the files that are in the first scene with a prefix like 100_, then all the files in the second scene with 200_, and so on. Press F5 to refresh the display and they're grouped by scene. Then i go back and look at the first scene and choose the opening clip and rename it to start with 110_ instead of 100_, then the second clip 120_, and so on. Press F5 again and now each scene has it's clips in order.

I go by tens so that if i change my mind later i've got room to stick something in as 115_ between 110_ and 120_. Use whatever numbering scheme works comfortably for you. If you have more than 10 scenes or 10 clips per scene you might have to use larger numbers, like 01010_, 02030_, and 15145_ and so forth.

Although I left storyboard editing years ago, I understand and appreciate where you are coming from. It is great for putting something together in a snap.

My favorite in those days was Ulead. You could flip back and forth between storyboard and timeline with a mouse click. Had a very decent MPEG-2 encoder as well. I have no idea how it's evolved since being bought by Corel.

thank you musicvid.

a second thought : The slideshow tool is present on VMS 11. Right now is for images only. How much code does it need to extend functionality to clips also? 3, 4 lines? A (very) easy way to outperform the concurrence. What irritates me is that is already available on the (much cheaper) MoviEZ (same company).
