Artifacts in cross-fades in version 9

Hi all

I have just started to see artifacts in my cross fades in version 9. Let me try and explain.

If I add a clip to my timeline and overlap a second clip to create a cross-fade I (sometimes) see artifacts in the cross-fade. If I then slide the two clips apart, the artifacts remain in the first clip. The artifacts are obviously remnants of the second clip.

When I preview each clip before adding it to the timeline there are no artifacts. When I add the second clip to the timeline and then run each clip before overlapping to cross-fade there are no artifacts. It only happens after I overlap the clips. If I then slide the second clip to the right, the artifacts remain in the first clip.

I haven't yet done any exhaustive testing but I get the impression that it happens after about 3 minutes of video.

I updated from 9c to 9e but it is still happening, so I'm guessing that it is hardware - maybe RAM problems?

Can anyone give me any clues as to how to diagnose what is going on and how to fix it?

Set your threads settings to 1 thread and see if that makes a difference. I had the same problem recently (only in clips with FX) and resetting the threads to 1 did the trick.

OK, I'll give that a try - thankyou

Update: well, it seemed OK at first but then started exhibiting the same sort of behaviour again :o(

Update: ran Memtest-86 and got lots of red error messages, so it looks like I do indeed have RAM issues!

Do you have any FX in the clips you are cross fading?

No FX of any description (sorry, should have read your first post more carefully!) - just a plain vanilla overlap-the-clips to create a cross fade, but seems like it's dud RAM that is the cause :o(

...was probably time to up that anyway, right? ;-/
