aspect ratio annoyance

ScottyLacy wrote on 11/30/2007, 7:08 PM
Hey all,

I'm working with HVX200 HD footage. Every time I import the clips into Vegas 8, I have to deselect "maintain aspect ratio" on every clip. Otherwise the footage appears in a 4:3 aspect ratio.

Is there any way to have Vegas recognize this footage and display it at the proper aspect ratio? Or is there a way to toggle "maintain aspect ratio" such that it's off by default?

Just looking to drop my files on the timeline and not have to adjust AR every time....

Change the aspect ratio globally in the Project Properties. Alternatively, you can select all clips in the project media bin and set the AR there.

Sadly, neither of those approaches appear to work. The former shows the clips as squeezed when added to the timeline; the latter approach can only be applied to one clip at a time (and even at that, the AR is incorrect when previewing the clip from the project media window).

What template are you using in your Project Properties?

That would determine your overall project settings, how your clips show on the timeline, and can affect your Preview window size ( you have another Project properties button on that too, make sure its correct as well).

Chose the -------> "HDV 1080-60i(1440x1080, 29.97fps)" template to get your HDV footage to show the right (16:9) AR on timeline, Project Media, and Preview window...

The HVX200, can record DVCPRO HD in three different modes. But doesn't record in the HDV format

In the Project Properties window (File - Properties), click the Match Media Settings icon (looks like a folder icon, to the far right of the Template box).
Now browse to the folder where your media is located and double- click on one of your pieces of footage.
All relevant settings should now be reflected in the Properties window.
Click Apply and save this as a template for future use.

rs170a: thanks for the tip. It doesn't seem to work with my HVX200 footage, but I'm thinking that's not the fault of Vegas. It appears that HVX footage is designed to be stretched horizontally at a 1.5x factor. But clearly this Match Media Settings is the way to go. Thanks for pointing it out.

Have you got the correct pixel AR set?

Footage looks fine when I deselect "maintain aspect ratio." But I was hoping to find project setting that wouldn't require me to make that change for every clip in my project. Alas, I can find no way to do it.

At the very least, if I could change the default setting of "maintain aspect ratio," I'd be good to go.

Scotty, is there anywhere you can post a few seconds of footage or tells us where we can download a sample so that we can play with it and try to find a fix for you?

Sure. Thanks so much for the offer.

Again, I suspect there's something unique about the HVX200's HD files. They are delivered as 1280 x 1080 files but are viewed at 1920 x 1080. The HVX uses some sort of pixel shift technology to create HD res with a smaller sensor.

couple of things u need to know.. i found this the hard way...

Vegas doent alwyas read teh flags properly, in turn, you must go to each clip and chaaange the aspect to 1.45
U can do this with a nifty lil script, or u can do it manually.

The other thing, is that Vegas sometimes sees progressive footage as upper field first.
Read my post about HDV downconvert and Vegas flakiness when reading the flag.

the issue here is to ensure your project properties are either using a HD, HDV template or 16:9 temaplte.
From there, your footage will look squeezed which is perfectly normal. If you want to see the unsqueezed preview, jsut left click ur preview window and select simulate device aspect. this will give you a proper frame

Really vegas is a good tool, but these minor niggles can throw you off..

Thanks, DJPadre. I'm learning lots of things about Vegas I didn't know; unfortunately, I haven't solved my AR problem (short of going the scripting route, as you point out). The only thing that seems to work is deselecting "Maintain Aspect Ratio." I wish that was a global setting that I could apply to a project.

Sorry Scotty but I'm obviously missing a codec as, when I drop that file on my Vegas 8 timeline, I only get the audio :-(
