aspect ratio question

Hi all

I am using VMS 8 with DAS 4.5. I shot some video on a widescreen camera, but in 4:3 mode. It imported ok, and I set my project to NTSC DV (720x480).

Edited ok in 4:3 and exported using the Make Movie and Burn to DVD...I didn't select the use Widescreen option or the Stretch to Fill Output option.

I burned directly from DAS. Everything was ok.

Tried the DVD out on a standard CRT TV and it was cropped a bit, but otherwise ok.

Tried it out on a widescreen TV, and it stretched out to fill the 16:9 screen. Even hitting the pic size button my remote, the options were ghosted out. Tried it on another 16:9 TV and same thing....couldn't get it back to 4:3.

On the computer, it seems to depend on the software. In Power DVD and Intervideo Win DVD it goes to 4:3 automatically. In Nero Showtime, it stretches to 16:9 and I have to switch it manually, and then it crops a good chunk from the right side (strange).

The stream info in Intervideo shows 720x480 with a 4:3 ratio.

Is there something I can set in the production process to ensure I get 4:3 output everywhere?

Thanks

P.S. I understand that on widescreen TV's I will get black bars on the sides; that's fine - I would rather that than everyone looking 20 pounds heavier!

Double check that you exported using the NTSC 4:3 DVD template, and that while on DVDA you didn't let anything widescreen related get checked.

Hi

Thanks for the reply. I checked, and yes, everything is set to NTSC DV 720x480, not the widescreen setting, both in VMS and DAS.

Any other thoughts? I tried playing with the "stretch to fill output" checkbox, and the "widescreen DVD" checkbox, but they didn't help much.

What camera did you use. Most (I think) wide screen (16:9) cameras that do both HD and SD will still record teh SD in 16:9. What camera allows you to change to 4:3? I know that some older SD cams (ie PD170) had a pseudo 16:9 function but was still shooting with 4:3 sensors, just cropping thetop and bottom.

Also pixel ratio plays a role: not all pixels are square, on the contrary. So you must check the pixel ratio.

I used the Canon XHA1...it has a pretty clear 4:3 SD mode.

As for pixel ratio, I never changed anything. It's set to 0.9091 (NTSC DV).
