AT897 and flat/roll off switch

Chakra5films wrote on 6/16/2005, 12:18 PM
Obviously a newbie question here, but ...

I just bought an AT897 and I see it has a flat/roll-off switch. Upper setting is slightly curved and the bottom setting is flat.

Can someone please explain what each setting is (I assume the flat icon is for the flat setting, but you never know) and what environment I would use each for?

Thanks alot in advance.

Try posting your question over hear, there's quite a few audio users that should be able to help you: http://bbvegas.mywowbb.com/
or do some searching in these forums. I've seen user Rednroll answer this question a few times in these forums, but he's no longer in these forums.

It's not going to do anything that you cannot do using Eq in Vegas. But if you are in a noisy environment it may help if you're going into a typical video camera. Getting rid of the unwanted low frequencies before the camera's AGC sees them can help keep the level of what you want more constant.

Rolling off the lows can keep the mic's internals from even sending those frequencies down the line. This can have a HUGE effect on headroom.
