I am currently using the ATI 7500 and I have not experienced any problems. All input and output are via firewire...but I'm sure it is also related to the rest of my system's components... what's in yours?

System specs:

850Mhz Athlon T-Bird
Chaintech 7AJA MoBo
512 Megs or Ram
20 Gig 7200 RPM system drive
40 Gig 7200 RPM audio drive
Echo Mia
Turtle Beach Montego Quadzilla
WindowsMe
3Dfx Voodoo 3-2000

I want to switch to Windows XP Home, and since 3Dfx is extinct and doesn't have compatible drivers, I'm looking at the ATI also.
I would only need to capture some home movies to burn to VCD. Getting a separate card to capture what is essentially a few hours of footage seems overkill.
I know, I know, it all depends on how important the footage is.
That's why I figured the AIW might be good.

You may experience Audio/video sync problems with ATI AIW products. I did with the AIW 128 Pro as well as snap, crackle, pops on the audio. I still use the ATI for video to the monitor only and bought a Canopus ADVC-100 analog to digital converter and a 1394 OHCI firewire card. The ADVC-100 is a little external box that you can connect analog as well as DV equipment to to convert to DV through the firewire card. It has perfect sync, you won't lose video quality and your capture file sizes will be smaller. XP should have native driver support for your 3Dfx card, so you could spend the money on getting the canopus and 1394 card instead. You get get both for about $300USD.
