ATI VIDEO CARD AND SONY MEDIA CONVERTER

This is a rookie question to all the high rollers out there. Maybe a simple one but I need an honest opinion. I have a ATI all in wonder 128 video card that I bought. I guess it is not what i need to make the video input (AVI) from my S-VHS VCR since ATI's software only allows you to import and convert to Mpeg 1 & 2, Can I keep this video card along with the sony Media converter to make my editing experience an enjoyable one. What are the pro's and cons of this set up or any suggestions on upgrading?

PIII, 733Mhz, 512Ram,

Thanks,

Robert

I think I understand what you are trying to do, but wouldn't it be a better idea to use the Sony Media Converter to convert between your S-VHS VCR and a 1394 Firewire card (DV video)? Like this:

VCR -(S-VHS)-> Sony MC -(DV)-> Computer (via Firewire card)

1394 cards aren't very expensive and the quality of the DV captured is going to be much better than that of the MPEG video captured by your ATI card. Also, printing your final edits back to tape is going to be much easier to do via firewire than though an analog card.

I've used the ATI all in wonder 128. It has the ability to import as .AVI. I haven't used their software with it, but if you use SF Video Capture with that card, that's the only format you have a choice to import it as, because Vid Cap, does not have the ability to use the Mpeg converters on the card like the ATI software does.

So try importing with Video Capture and see what you get.

If i understand your post correctly, you already own or are definately
planning on getting the Sony media coverter, right?

Assuming that to be the case, then your ATI card will become strictly
a video card for your computer monitor; you will ignore the video in and
video out functions on the card. Of course, you can still use it to watch
TV on your computer monitor if you wish. The Sony media converter
will do a vastly superior job with the video in and out than the ATI card
could ever do.
