One of 2 possibilities come to mind (I've never looked at the content of iTunes files, so this is somewhat speculation):

1) VMS doesn't have the correct codec to read the audio.
2) The audio is protected in some fashion from letting you do what you are doing. You purchased the rights to listen to the audio, not to edit with it (using the audio in the fashion you are attempting is refered to as syncing, and those rights can be very hard, if not impossible to get unless you live in an enlightened country like Australia).

If you want to have some fun and have some time spend, use the search function to search the Vegas forum on the keyword "copyright"

yes, iTunes formats in M4P, not MP3, so your software isn't recognizing it. You'll have to do what he said and burn it to a CD, then rip it back off into a compatible format like MP3.
