Audio advantages of VV4 over VA2?

Hulk wrote on 2/17/2003, 11:10 PM
I'm currently using VA2 for audio only tasks. I love this program. I also have SF6.0 and use it a lot as well.

SF recently sent me an upgrade offer to VV4 for $149. I don't use VA for video editing and I highly doubt I ever will. My question is are there any significant audio upgrade in VV4?

Please don't tell me too many to list. Just list 3 or 4 meaningful ones please.

Thanks for taking the time to help me out.

Too many to list. Why not read the literature? There's plenty of information about all the new tools from V2 to V4.

Buss tracks
Fx automation
ASIO
constant input monitoring with FX
Phase Switches

don't forget the master buss!

That's right. The master bus was a major improvement, perhaps the single most important one since 1.0 (and to date). Without it Vegas was not really a good tool to mix with.

Thanks. FX automation is definitely a big plus. As are phase switches, I like to record a bottom snare mic, out of phase with the top mic.

I've been using VA2 just with a consumer sound card, as most of my work has been mixing. I'm thinking of getting a MOTU 896, I like the ability to use my PIII1200 laptop w/firewire to record. How is the 896 compatiblity wise?

Also, my main system is a P4 2.4B with a 845PE mobo, 333MHz memory. About how many tracks do you think I can do with VV4 on this system?

depends on how many real time fx you have running. but my guess is a lot of tracks. more that 24 or 32.

Try and find someone using an 828 or 896 flawlessly, and then investigate what they have in their system - You'll save yourself a lot of hassle troubleshooting any glitches if you work this way!

and how can you ignore the glaring issues of MOTU and SF apps currently (unless you prefer ASIO, which I don't).

JoeD... I'm interested in details about your feelings regarding ASIO. Years of exposure have left me considering Steinberg to be a company long on ideas and way short on execution and I've noticed that ASIO has created far more problems in Acid and Vegas 4 than benefits.

JoeD...How can you ignore the glaring issues of MOTU and the "windows platform". Come on now. Your actually touting motu for use with windows? If you said mac then fine. But windows? I've read everywhere how everyone is told to stay away from motu stuff like the plague in windows. Bad service and even worse drivers. Can it work well. I guess but the ratio is about the same as people being able to get a DAW to work right with Win ME,a soundblaster live card and a motherboard with a "via" chipset!

That bad MOTU drivers stuff is ancient history, since over 9 months ago.

Apart from this latest quirk, which would seem to be more of a Microsoft fuckup, or an SF incompleteness (they have acknowledged the problem, and can somehow implement a workaround in V and A 4).
