Audio artifacts won't change with new media

I'm a new user and get stumped often but usually can find answers in the forums or video help. This one is really stumping me.

I have several "comp" audio files in the timeline that contain the watermark from the audio source. The first time I tried to swap the comp clip with a new media file without the watermark, Vegas refuses to recognize that the new media is anything but the old clip. It's as if the system has a cache that needs to be cleared.

I tried exiting Vegas without luck after restarting. The "clean" file plays back perfectly in a new project.

The old media file has been deleted from the media bin.

The only clue is that I don't get the audio ghost/artifact if I double-click on the media file instead of dragging it to the proper place on the timeline. Double-clicking plunks the file at the very end of my project on the last empty track...where it plays back with perfect fidelity. But if I then copy or drag the clean clip back to where the old one used to be, I get the old version playing with the watermark even though that media file is deleted from the bin.

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated!
