audio copy and past

i thought i had this figured out but now i can't seem to repeat my goal.

i have a 30 minute video. There is a section of audio that is in the middle of the event that i want to copy and paste over certain sections of the "native audio" .

I can't seem to figure out how to do this without splitting the video, deleting the video portion and now copying the audio. This splits up the original event, which I would like to avoid, if possible.

How do i copy a section of just the audio, without the video from within the body of the event and how do I paste it over just the portion of existing audio that I want to replace.

as an update to my post, i have tried the split, copy and paste, but the pasted audio does not replace the original audio, i simply hear them both.

How can i minimize the sound of just a portion of the original audio so only the new pasted audio is heard.

If you ungroup before you select the section then you can select the audio only. Personally i don't worry about that. I copy and paste both audio and video together to an empty spot on the timeline, then delete the video part and select/copy the audio. Yeah, that sounds more complicated, but it works easier for my brain. I like having things very discretely visible and obvious while i'm working on them. ;)

When you paste, are you pasting directly ON TO the existing audio clip? It sounds to me like you must be pasting it on a different track. Audio on separate tracks will mix together. A clip laid on top of another one (not overlapped end to end as in crossfading) will replace what's behind it.

Oh, i just noticed you mentioned "split". Don't do that. Just highlight the section you want and copy. If you split and then paste anywhere touching that split you'll get crossfades instead of replacement. Unnecessary splits also cause havoc with later editing.
