Audio Correction

Hi All,

I am using VMSP 6

I have some footage of a wedding that is take quite a way from the ceremony. To hear the dialogue I have to increase the volume significantly. When I do this the underlying "hum" comes up as well. I am trying to get rid of the underlying hum.

Reading other posts tells me a possible solution is Audacity. I have downloaded this and have it as the preferred audio editor. When I open the sound in Audacity I just get squeeky noise.

I have no idea what to do or even if this is the right program to use. What I am trying to do is record a sample of the hum (when there is no talking) and then remove this from the whole of the audio on the event. I have heard of this being done but just cannot crack it.

I was able to reproduce your problem. The solution is quick and easy. When you rightclick in Vegas on the audio part you want to edit with Audacity, you have a choice: open in audio editer, or open a copy in audio editer. When you 'open it', you get the garbled sound; but when you 'open the copy', it sounds just fine.
Then you can clean your sound with Audacity, save it as wav, and finally replace the original audio with the clean version in Vegas.

Thanks Ivan. I tried 'Open copy in Audio Editor' however when I try this I get an error saying that the system is low on memory and it will not allow me to proceed. I can 'Open in Audio Editor' however all I get is the squealing. Not sure where to go. Any ideas??

I run a pc with 512MB, which is pretty low spec, and it works just fine. Still, it could be a memory issue if your machine has less memory than mine (which is unlikely!).
Other things to consider:
What format are your clips? Mine are avi. Maybe that's the reason.
Can you start Audacity?
Can you have Audacity and Vegas running at the same time?

I have a pc with 2GB of memory. I only have VMSP open when trying to do this.

I am using .avi files from a canon mvx35i camera. When having a look at the file in GSpot it says the codec for the audio is PCM Audio - not that much of this means anything to me :( .

Pcm audio is the codec used by Vegas Movie Studio (Vegas Full has more audio codecs).

A solution, though not a handsome one, is in Vegas to render the sound only, and then open that file in Audacity, do the cleaning, and then use the cleaned file to replace the original sound in Vegas. This is also how Bill Myers does it in his youtube video tutorial.

Then all of a sudden it just worked. I tried again to open a copy from VMSP and it worked ????? *scratch head*.
