My config: AMD XP1800+, 1GB RAM, and an M-Audio Delta 66/Omnistudio, under WinXP Pro. I'm just learning the ropes with the Omnistudio.
Three distinct files: 1) DV footage shot with 48KHz unlocked audio (a Canon Optura 1-chipper I'm still fond of); 2) more DV footage, where the original unlocked audio was replaced by audio from a minidisc recorder, and rerendered back into one DV file; 3) a 48KHz audio-only music clip, exported from Reason.
When pulled into Vegas (or Sound Forge), all of these files sound great when the project's audio is set to 48KHz at any bit-depth.
When I change the project's audio to 96KHz and any bit-depth, I get crackling galore in audio #'s 1 and 2 above - the louder something is the more crackling you can hear through it. But audio #3, the non-DV related export from Reason, is crystal clear no matter what sample rate or bit depth when played in Vegas!
So surmising that it isn't my M-Audio card but more likely the audio files themselves, I've got a couple of questions for you smart folks.
First, is this due to my camera's clock, as well as my minidisc's, not having exactly 48KHz sample rates? With a camcorder capable of locked audio at exactky 48KHz, do you figure this might be fixed?
And second, is it worth even editing in 96KHz to begin with? I understand that when doing mixing, the higher the bit-depth the better (typically) even though you'll ultimately dither it down to probably 16-bit. But in regard to sample rate, if my sources are DV and some analogue, I'm guessing I'll never see benefit above 48KHz. If that's the consensus then I can certainly live without 96KHz.
Thanks for the feedback!
