audio deleting

another basic question.....I have a video clip with associated audio. I want to either delete just the audio portion or muting it work too. I have tried ungrouping the audio from the video and deleting but it deletes the video too. I've tried inserting volume markers but there is an initial sound at the beginning of the clip. I am sure there is an easy way to get rid or mute the audio portion of the selected event.

sorry for the basic questions and thanks for the help.

After ungrouping, click on just the audio portion again to select only it. Before you do this both the audio and video are still selected even though they're ungrouped.

Right now, your video and audio are "Grouped" together as a single item. If you try to delete one, they both get deleted.

If you right-click on your clip, you should find "Group / Remove From Group".
After you've separated them as a group, you should be able to delete one while leaving the other. If this hasn't worked for you, it is probably because both items are still selected after you ungrouped. So be careful to ungroup them, select any other item, then carefully select just the item you want to delete. (You can drag the item left-and-right to verify you have the correct item before deleting).

Alternatively, when adding media to the timeline, you should be able to right-drag it to the timeline, then select "Add Video-Only".

Finally, another option is to turn the volume of the audio-portion down to zero.
Hold your cursor at the top of the audio-clip, near the middle of the clip, and drag down, which will decrease the volume. If you drag the volume all the way to zero, it should be the same as muting just that clip. The first couple options are much more preferable... but this can work if all else fails.
