audio drivers lost in installation

I've tried installing Sony Vegas several times (Toshiba Satellite U305-S5107 running Vista 32) and each time, my audio drivers/sound devices disappear (and, consequently, all sound.) The devices are Realtek High Def Audio on a Toshiba laptop. Once I remove the Vegas software and restart, they all reappear.
I'm surethere's a tweak in a file somewhere that can fix this, but I have no idea where to begin. Any help?

Have you gone to the RealTek site and ensured you have the latest HD audio codecs? Updates can often make a real difference.

Any chance you are also updating an NVidia video driver too? I know that I (and others have reported) that recent drivers will alter the way the ONBOARD RealTek audio works. It is a simple fix in the BIOS to solve it.

not that I know of, but I updated the codecs and it seems to have worked. now to see if I can use the software. ;-)
