Audio Echoes When Capturing from VHS

Hello. I just recieved Vegas 5.0 and I'm having a little bit of trouble getting the sound to work properly when capturing from a VCR. The sound's working, but it echoes in the background, like when someone's talking.

I'm using a Hauppage WINTV capture card, and I have the red and white RCA cables that are running through a stereo splitter that has a one 5mm male pin to 2 RCA ends coming from my VCR to the input of my soundcard.

Another bit of information is that I'm somehow only getting sound out of one speaker whenever I try to watch or capture anything in the first place. I've got a stereo card, and my settings to capture are set on stereo as well, but everything turns out mono. I can't figure that out and I've been working on it for god knows how long.
Please help.

As posted on the DMN, you are experiencing the normal latency that comes with capture in pretty well any capture app.
Regarding the stereo/mono situation, you likely have a bad connector or bad cord.
I don't know anything about the Hauppage card, other than a while back, everyone seemed to be having challenges with it.

What kind of card would you recommend ? I've heard that a WINTV card is a decent one. at least one that came out in the last couple of years, right ?

Canopus ADVC-100 or ADVC-300

If you're capturing with VidCap, turn off Options / Preview Audio. This way you'll only hear the sound coming from the VCR and you won't hear the slightly delayed echo that comes from the capturing process. Most likely your captures have been fine all along and you've only been hearing the echo while capturing.

Look at the male connector carefully (actually it's about 3.2mm). It should have three distinct metal sections for stereo. If you only see two sections then it's a mono adapter and you'll only get sound on the left channel. These images show the difference:

mono: Radio Shack mono 1/8" plug
stereo: Radio shack stereo 1/8" plug

A cable like this would connect the VCR to the sound card without needing any additional adapters. Radio Shack 6' Gold Series Y-Adapter Audio Cable

Hauppauge cards aren't great. They mostly work, but there are much better solutions out there. The only real advantage of a card like this is that it's cheap.
