Audio editing query

I'm now into the realms of trying to edit out some extrenuous background noises on some of my training videos, like clunks etc. I haven't got Sound Forge et al and didn't want to spend too much pc-related dosh (else the wife will plug me in to the mains)so I tried a freebie called Audacity which will probably do the job, but when I click on all but the 1st audio event (the 1st one is ok) an error message says 'RIFF file does not specify 'WAVE' as type. I'm r-clicking and pulling up audio editor. These are on Voice track. Does anyone know a way round this, or can suggest a low cost editor.

Why don’t you just use a Volume Envelope right in VideoFactory? I’ve used this when I’m recording a school play and someone drops something loud or coughs or makes any undesirable noise. I just dip the volume at that point. I had a video of a fireworks display once, but I could hear the police using their whistles to direct traffic in the background, which was very annoying. I just used a volume envelope to dip the volume each time the whistle blew. I also had a music track so the drip wasn’t even noticeable.

Obviously, Sound Forge and Sound Forge Studio work best with Video Factory.

I've found that when using third party audio editors, you have to use the "Open Copy in Audio Editor" command rather than the more direct "Open in Audio Editor" command.

Assuming your background noise is just that, you could try replacing the "noisy" bits with audio you've copied from somewhere else. I like Acoustica as a low cost audio editor.

You've all given me some good options, as always on this forum. Thanks for your help.
