Audio EQ Automation

Is there a simple and efficient method of changing eq on a track using the automation. I'm working on a 1.5 hour piece and the source VO is all over the place so I'd like to be able to quickly change eq in places where the voice is muffled etc. without taking it to a separate track and adding different eq to that track.
The problem I've had is having to add many envelope points to make this happen, especially when I have selected "all" in the FX Automation chooser. Or perhaps there is an excellent tutorial someone could recommend.
Thanks much,

Having selected and modified your EQ to the desired settings with automation off set the automation to Write/Latch and play through the section you want to EQ.
When a region of VO requires the same EQ as a previously eq'd section you can either go back to the previous region and select it, choose 'Copy' (Control c) and then on the section you want to have the same EQ setting right click and select 'Paste Attributes'.
Alternatively you can set up a desired EQ curve and save it with a name then apply it to later regions.

I will usually only add the gain OR the frequency of one band to the envelope display. Perhaps you could set up a couple bands and only automate the gain of each?
If it's very complicated it may be easier to set up several tracks (I know you want to avoid this but at least crossfades are easy.)
