Audio Levels

Burned project for client approval and,---
Noticed background audio on menu is hot, and audio in project had to be boosted when play was activated.
But levels on timeline were recorded OK,---not low.
Also notice some variance in levels of narration,---although all segments were recorded at the same setting, distance from mic etc.
Are we overlooking something?

Cannot answer specifically from the information you left. You can always render your .ac3 file separately and then open Vegas DVD-A and play the .ac3 file to make sure it sounds the way you want before you actually burn a DVD.
Try to "normalize" each audio track , then you can try assigning a "Compressor" to each audio track. Adjust the compressor to keep the levels of each track up to a certain point (each track has the ability to have effects added to enhance the track. Compression automatically brings the volume up to compensate for various High and Low levels within the track.)
Volume adjustment for each audio track is also possible..
Leave specific information to let us know what you went through to get to the point you're at now.

Did you use ac3 audio by any chance?
If so make certain you disable Line Mode Profile and RF Mode Profile (set them to None). Also Dialogue Normalisation should be at -27dB unless you've already compressed the audio and which case you could bring it upto say -21dB.

If you've used .wav audio aka linear, PCM, then you probably need to apply some compression, particularly to the dialogue. Normalisation should only be done as the final step, once you have everything sitting right.

Also Dialogue Normalisation should be at -27dB...

Bob, in a previous post, you (and a few other folks) said to set that level to -31. Are you changing your recommendation now? If so, why? Just curious.
