Download a codec reader (Google for one- there are free ones) and drop that avi on it. It will tell you what codec was used to make the avi file as avi is just the wrapper it comes in. You need to install the codec to be able to play and see the video portion of the file.

Thanks. I think you're on the right track but I just did a gspot test on the avi file
and it said I have an adaquate codex in place.

Essentially the same question a few threads (windows medoa play but not vegas) apart so I'll ask the same question :-)

Where did the avi originally come from?
i.e. digital camera, another video app, the net, etc.

Did GSpot report that it was an MJPEG .AVI file? If so, then Windows Media Player includes a Direct-X MJPEG codec and will play the file. Vegas only sees and uses VFW (Video for Windows) compatible codecs, so the file won't play in Vegas unless you install a VFW-compatible MJPEG codec. www.mainconcept.com has one and I believe that you can download the demo and use it to decode the file. Morgan Multimedia is another source.

Anyway, the question remains; what did GSpot report?

The file came from my camcorder.

Gspot says ; "codec is installed. Mpeg4s Decoder DMD".

I just got advice from Sony's help line for $14.95. They said to download MJPEG.
CODEC from one of two sites. I chose Pagasusimaging. I downloaded a trail
version.(it would cost $29 to keep). All this and still no video.

OK, MPEG4 is not at all the same as MJPEG. I'm fairly certain that Vegas 6d will import MPEG4. What version of Vegas are you running?

Optionally, you could use the Pro version of Quicktime 7 to convert it to an uncompressed .AVI file which Vegas will certainly load.

Thanks a lot. This solved my problem. I downloaded an mpeg converter from
Main Concepts, ran the avi through it, imported the new mpg file into Vegas and,
low and behold, there was the video in the timeline.
Tks again,
Don
