Audio meters on camera

Is there a digital camera out there for under $3,000 that has audio meters and manual adjustments? I thought the Canon XL 1s did, but in looking at the specs, it seems to have manual adjustment, but no meters. How can you manually adjust if you can see if it's peaking? Is there an assessory with meters? Thanks for the input.

Yup, the Canon XM2=PAL - - GL2=NTSC

Apart from the 20x optical zoom, this is THE other reason I got the XM2.

Manual 2 channel; Dials; both audio meters aqppear in the eyepiece, the LCD - AND there is a side window with the meters flashing away too . . .perfect!

PD150 has viewfinder audio metering and manual level control although I wouldn't recommend switching that camera into manual audio as it seems to bring the noise floor up.
Best camera for just about manual everything is the DVX 100. It has a shooting modes that pretty well only work in manual but then it does things that other cameras cannot manage so it's a moot point.

The Sony VX-2000 has them, but you cannot control L and R channnels independantly.

Canon XM2, you can control L and R channel independantly. It also has mic attenuation. I've recorded stuff while standing in front of a majorly MASSIVE loudspeaker system . . it worked . . .

XM2 doesn't have the low light parameters of the Sonys suggested . . . The sound on the XM2 is spectacular. Go try them out at a shop/Canon dealer . . .

Could this be an alternative, just seen it on the web.

The Canon XL-1/XL-1s certainly DOES have meters. We use the meters all the time to verify our mics are working correctly and adjust sound levels. However, I'm not sure you'll find one for under $3000.

Thanks for al the input...but one more question. I have the GL1 (love it except for audio) and it has a "slim" and "stretch" effect. Does the GL2 have this? I don't see it in the specs.

I'm not sure but I think the slim and stretch are useful if you shoot with anamorphic to "render" back the image in a "normal optical condition"...

Otherwise lynj, I think you can use the pan-crop tool (with proper settings) in Vegas to get similar results from a standard image.
