Audio Newbie - Dropped in songs "red line"

I have used vegas for a few years, but I have never dealt much with the audio features. For the past year or so when I drop in a song it plays louder than if I were to play it with itunes, windows media player, etc. I don't alter the settings on my computer at all. It seems to play normally on a dvd once burnt, but doing and preview of the timeline shows the sound levels up in the red area and it starts to break up and distort.

Can anybody throw me a bone as to what I might need to do?

thanks

I forgot to add that my projects are 48 khz 16-bit.

So long as the audio meters don't go over 0dBFS there's nothing wrong as such. I suspect the issue is more to do with how you're monitoring the audio coming out of Vegas.
For example WMP has it's own level meter, you might have that set to -12dB.
Assuming the song came from a CD then it should have been recorded very close to the maximum level possible (peaks at -0.1dBFS) so yes it'll be loud and the meters will go into the red unless you turn the track down.
