I believe the vcr outputs only mono (white cable). Can vegas capture this?

How is it plugged into your computer? I guess you have no FireWire output on this camera?

Yes it is firewire. Normal DV shot through the camera captures audio and video fine.

If your camera got it, I can't see why Vegas won't capture the whole thing... with a DV tape originally shot with the cam, everything works ok?
Is it just with this recording of your VCR (on the cam) ? I did the same: taped an analog 8mm video tape from its original camera on my DV camera and the sound was there on tape... but I didn't check Vegas Capture afterwards (just my sister's kids for "archives")...

Yes, with a DV tape originally shot footage works fine. Just the recording from the VCR is where the audio gets lost during capture.

I've done many procedures like this, and Vegas has always picked up the audio. I don't see how it would be different in this case. You should try recording it again, on a new tape, and see if the problem recurs. I'm not a seasoned engineer, but I have done quite a few analog-to-digital transfers with my camera, and vegas has never failed me (even in Vegas 3.0).

Please post your results if you ever get this resolved...
