audio plays in slow motion

Any 48,000 Hz, Mono MPEG-2 audio that I import into Vegas 8b as part of an old movie clip whose video specs are 720x480x32 fps progressive plays in slow motion. I understand that this is function of the 48,000 Hz sample rate but how do I get it to playback at a normal speed so I can edit the clip.
Thanks in advance for any help!

Many older sound cards do not support 48K, they only play back at 44.1K.

OTOH, the SoundBlasters' guts were 48k, and they had to convert on the fly to play at 44.1.

I have other 48k audio files that playback fine. I think it has something to do with it being mono because every file that plays in slow motion is mono.

If your right click on the audio event and select properties and the "General" tab does the Audio-streams sample rate show it as 48,000 HZ ?

The properties of one of the slow motion clips under "General" reads:

Streams
Video: 00:03:20.659, 23.976 fps progressive, 720x480x32, MPEG-2 Audio 1: 00:03:20.608, 48,000 Hz, Mono, MPEG

How slow does it play back? 10% slower? half speed?
Sounds like a pain - perhaps the audio was encoded with VBR instead of CBR (variable bit rate vs constant bit rate.)
Try a tool like GSpot to get more info on your file...
