Audio pop problem

GaryStebbins wrote on 10/30/2003, 1:37 AM
I've just found some (all I've tested so far) of my existing projects now play back with lots of audio popping. In quiet sections of audio, there is no popping, but it shows up when the sections get louder. I have applied the 4.0d patch since last working with these projects.

I highlighed a ~10 second section, cut it and pasted it into a new project. Pops still there. Rendered to new track and played. The pops are gone. Even if I mute the new track so only the original tracks are there, the pops are still gone.

What gives? Any ideas? It only occurs within Vegas, no other apps.

Thanks

Gary

Are you using an M-Audio card? what's your full system spec? I have this problem intermittantly with my delta 1010, no matter what driver. I had thought it was perhaps related to my three UAD1 cards. However turns out these can only cause playback crackle, as when I removed them recording crackle on the delta 1010 was still evident.

Gary,
Not to get off the subject, but you wouldn't happen to live in Central PA, would you?

I looked, but I don't think this forum has any User Profile page.

I have a Creative Live! 5.1 sound card. I have also upgraded my motherboard, so thought that could be a source of problems, but the fact that the problem goes away when I render and play seems to indicate something within Vegas.

jester700, I'm in Edmonds, WA (a bit north of Seattle). It looks like there's no useful profile here.

Thanks for responding. Just making sure you weren't an aquaintance of mine harboring a secret hobby. ;-)

I got hammered with "must be your creative card" a while back when I complained of the same thing. Fact is, it was a combination of XP and vegas causing mucho poppo. Forge did not. So I removed XP and went back to ME. No popping.

A lot of talk about IRQ's, updates that "would" help, and Creative being the problem. All I know is XP is a great OS, but if the main function of my machine is my music, then it comes up short to ME. (no pun intended)

I will be getting another sound card, but for now I can multitrack without trouble.

Hey Jason.....I too have a similar problem with different hardware. Seems that no matter what buffer setting etc., I get small random crackles when recording. I'm using the Frontier Dakota/Montana cards - no IRQ sharing, clock problems or anything else I could find. I am able to record without crackles if I use the Windows Classic Wave drivers instead of ASIO.

One problem with the current version of Vegas is that (to my knowledge) it enables all available ports on your audio interface. I have a total of 34 (!) inputs/outpus which would put quite a strain on the system if all of them are enabled/active. As I understand it, even though you may be only recording one mono track and monitoring a single stereo track, every one of your inputs and outputs are *enabled* which sucks up resources. If this is correct, Sony needs to address this soon. I have yet to record successfully with Vegas 4 ASIO. This was using Win 2K and I have just installed Win XP though yet to try ASIO recording - I am not optimistic, however.
