Audio Project Properties, Peaks, and Render Result

I guess this question has been asked before, but I couldn't find the answer in a brief search.

I know that the Final Render Settings determine the properties of the final video rather than the Properties you give the project during editing (At least that is the way I have always understood it).

My question is: How do the Audio properties you set up for the project affect Peak Building and do the properties of those Peaks affect the properties of the audio of the final render?

In a traditional Vegas DV project let's say.

Anyone know?

The peaks are generated at the sample rate of the source file, independent of any project or render property.

The project sample rate determines the sample rate at which Vegas will playback the audio. That means any audio that has a different sample rate to the project will be resampled which does impose some load on the CPU.

The Resample Quality set in the Project impacts the quality of the rendered output if any resampling takes place.

Thanks John,

That makes sense since if you load the source file into a project it builds peaks before you even set project properties and doesn't ask to rebuild them if you set project properties that are different than the source.

Thanks Bob,

If I load DV footage into Vegas, the default sample rate is 44,100 Hz for a DV project and not 48,000 Hz unless I change it. Why is that? Although wouldn't it change when rendered to the default render sample rate of 48,000Hz for Video for Windows (*.avi) with the NTSC DV template anyway making the project properties for audio moot?

Ask SCS, I've complained about this several times.
Just change it.

One issue I guess that might have been in the back of their minds is that some audio hardware will not work at 48KHz, probably some of the early Creative stuff.

Correct. The only impact is during preview.

Thanks Bob,

Essentially the same deal as the video.
