Audio Question (PCM)

Hi,

I am using the trial version of Movie Studio 13 Platinum (I know this board is for Vegas, but I didn't see one for MS) to see if it will meet my needs. I have a question about exporting.

I am trying to a 1920x1080 video with 23.9fps and 5.1 uncompressed/lossless audio. However, I can't find an option that meets all those criteria. The video aspects are always an option, but sometimes the audio either doesn't let me choose a lossless format or 6 channels. The closest I've gotten to my ideal project can only use AC-3, which is lossy. (I have been successful using WMV, but my playback system doesn't support WMA that is more than 2 channels).

If I am able to choose all of the options I want, it tells me that that template is not available.

Any advice?

Thanks!

Jason

You will have a hard time finding a delivery format that supports your needs, unless it is on BluRay or DVD disc.

Usually, delivery codecs support AC3 or AAC audio.

Use AC3 and a high bitrate. It may be lossy, but at higher bitrates it's *almost not* lossy. Pretty much all commercial DVD/BR releases use AC3, so if it's good enough for hollywood ...

(By the way, the 'Movie Studio' forum is named 'Vegas Movie Studio', since 'Movie Studio' is the Movie Studio version of Vegas.)

5.1 uncompressed audio at even CD rate will leave little room for video,,,,,

Thank you all for your responses. I'm a little disappointed I can't get the result I wanted, but I don't think the AC3 will be a problem. (Not that I don't believe you guys, as you know far more than I ever will about this, but don't a lot of BDs have lossless, such as DTS?)

Thanks again!

A lot of BDs have DTS but it is not lossless.

I'm sorry, DTS-HD. I found that DTS-HD Master is lossless, but is regular DTS-HD? Reason I'm asking is because my source audio from the BD is DTS-HD.

Thanks!

No.
And converting it to PCM will not make it so.

There are 2 types of DTS-HD. The high resolution audio format which is lossy and the master audio which is not.

It's kind of moot anyway because DTS-hd encoders are quite expensive and don't come with stock editing programs.... and even if you purchase one (and I made the mistake of doing so) you will have a tough time finding reasonable program to author Blu Ray (with dts hd) that doesn't cost an arm/leg.

You can do multi channel WAV but the chances are your player (unless expensive) won't recognize it. Multi channel AAC is a better way to go but again it depends on whether or not your player will accept it.

As Peter notes, DTS is not lossless, but more to the point, you will find it very difficult to put together a reasonably priced workflow for anything above Dolby Digital (or dts for dvd which adobe can do)

They have done this on purpose in an attempt to keep these higher audio qualities at the commercial level..

Gotcha all. Thanks, everyone!
