Audio sounds like it is being compressed badly?

When I use DVD architech to prepare and burn a home music video the audio sounds like I put a compressor on it. You can hear the volume pumping as if I had misused a compressor on the whole mix. Any ideas as how to stop that? if i use the DVD prepare and burn program that came with the Sony DVD burner it works fine.

I'll bet you're using AC3 audio. By default, the Sonic Foundry .AC3 codec in DVDA and Vegas does apply dynamic range compression.

You should use Vegas to do your AC3 audio encoding where you can customize the AC3 parameters. Go to "File" > "Render As", under "Save as type" select "Dolby Digital AC3", under "Template" select "Stereo DVD" and then hit the "Custom" button. The dynamic range compression can now be defeated by going to the "Preprocessing" tab and setting the "Line Mode Profile" and "RF Mode Profile" to "none." Since you are encoding music, you also might want to up the data rate from the default "192 kbps" to "256 kbps" or perhaps higher.

Once you've changed these settings, save it as a custom template so you can use it again.
