Audio "Sweetener" means what???

When a sound file is denoted/named as a "sweetener," what exactly does that mean?

The term is used in various ways. Usually it means the the sounds will add subtle atmosphere and ambience to your mix.

It can also mean to simply enhance a sound without it being obvious.
For example, underscoring a motorcycle exhaust with a lion's roar can also be considered a sweetener.
