audio track overlap

When there is an audio transition where 2 tracks in a timeline overlap, the resulting overlap volume is much higher than either of the original tracks, almost as if the sound waves are added rather than blended - is there a way to avoid having to add an audio volume envelope to adjust the output volume during the overlapped portion??

Thanks

Two event on the same track will by default create a crossfade, which gets around the problem you describe.

If the two audio event on seperate tracks, you can manually drag the top corners of events to create fade ins/outs and effectively create a crossfade.

for more detail you can search the in-built Vegas help file for:
'fades'
'crossfades'

For even more control look into Envelopes.
Also Compression is another somewhat more advanced thing to consider.
