Using DVD architect 1c, when I preview the video everything is fine. Menus and sound are OK. MPEG file was previous rendered in Vegas, 2.4 GB.

DVD architect lists Disk used is listed as 2.7 GB,
Video 720 x 480 x 32, 29.970 fps, 1:17:09:20 MPEG-2
Audio 44,1000 Hz, Stereo 1:17:09:20, MPEG Layer 2.

I go and create the build file, and the audio_ts folder is empty. I specified variable rate encoding, 6 mps as the maximum rate.

What's up?

Dave

The Audio_TS folder is SUPPOSED to be empty.

The way the DVD spec is written, the video, audio, and subtitles all get put in the VOB files, and these all get put in the VIDEO_TS directory. I read somewhere what the AUDIO_TS directory was going to be used for, but no one ever uses it. However, it needs to be there in order to make the DVD player "happy."

I, too, used to believe that the AUDIO_TS folder was necessary for a disc to work with standard DVD players; however, I happened to notice the other day that both Disc 1 and Disc 2 of at least one commercial DVD that I have ( "Ice Age", published by 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment) don't have AUDIO_TS folders.

In addition to the expected VIDEO_TS, Disc 1 also has some other non-standard junk (an "ice_age_mac" folder for Macintosh games + some other files) in the root. All of this doesn't seem to interfere with either disc's playability on my home theater system. So much for standards, I guess...

It probably isn't necessary for most -- and perhaps all -- players. However, it cots nothing to put it there, and most authoring programs do just that. You'd feel rather silly if you found a player that wouldn't play a DVD, just because you didn't put the AUDIO_TS folder on it.

It is not necessary at all.

If I use DVD Clone to create a disc and only give it a video_ts file, it will produce an empty audio_ts file and put it on the disc. It apparently also thinks that an audio_ts file is needed for some reason. Apparently the audio_ts file has"nothin to do with nothin" but still needs to be there. I am sure the Sony boys and girls who built the software could provide us with the "whole" story.

The AUDIO_TS directory is were DVD-AUDIO stores is files. Much like DVD-Video which has VOB files in its directory the DVD-Audio Format has AOB files (Audio Objects).
The DVD-Audio will have both audio and graphics stored in this directory and DVD audio players will access the data from there.
A mixed DVD can also be create which will playthe AOB files from the AUDIO_TS directory on DVD-Audio players, and play the VOB files from the VIDEO_TS directory on DVD video players, and play both on Universal Players.

Exactly. I just went to grab my Donald Fagen "Nightfly" DVD audio disc, and the Dolby Digital and DTS Files are stored in the VIDEO_TS folder, and the advanced Resolution Audio and Surround (48k /24 bit) files are in the AUDIO_TS folder. In this case the AUDIO TS drectory is 1.75 Gigs and the VIdeo_TS is 1.05 Gigs.
