audio & video loose sync - firepod & tape

ok, taped a panel interview - camera is a dv5000 using 48k audio, on board mic for sync -

each panel member (5) had a wireless lapel, going into a firepod and recording in vegas, audio properties 48k & firepod set to 48k

after the shoot, captured video into audio project, synced the video on the front end, but then at the back end it is out of sync - sync back-end, front is out of sync - any ideas what caused this?

Yipe,
the clocks in the camera and the laptop / Firepod are running at ever so lsightly different frequencies, can even happen between two cameras, the video will stay in sync as it's based on discrete frames but not the audio.

Piece of cake to fix in Vegas, nuch easier if you slate the heads and tails but still easy enough to do.

I'd look into something like the Motu Traveller, I think it can lock it's clocks to video from the camera. Of course if you have more than one camera then keeping all the video and audio in sync is difficult without broadcast like gear. Thankfull Vegas fixes these problems easily.

How far out of sync? I use a Korg D3200 and on an 80 minute tape with the audio recorded on the D3200 48kHz 16bit I am 2 frames out at the end. The FirePod and MOTU have what I consider serious problems with drivers. I have owned both and had no luck getting good recordings. There were 30 frame dropouts randomly dispursed in the wav file. (As if one cut out a section with auto-ripple on.) One second gaps cannot be fixed by anything.

it seemed to be a good 10-15 frames out of sync - even shrinking the audio some caused it to match on one end - but still be off at the other -

since this was an interview with cut-aways, I can and have re-synced each clip up - however it sure would have been nice to not have to do that

let me say though that for multitrack recording audio only - the firepod has been great
