Audio/Video Out of Sync

I have just recently changed from Pin.8 to SV MV 4. I am capturing from a high 8 camera through my ATI AIW 8500DV to my PC. It is a amd 2600, 1 gig or ram, XP SP2, Raid 0 wd 120G 8Mb cache. The video caputre goes through with out any problems and does not drop any frames. Every thing looks fine. Once I view the avi in wm player the video/audio is off or drop the avi file into vegas for editing the video time line is shorter than the audio time line. Video is 1:13min and the audio is 1:15min. What is causing the video and audio to be come so far oos. The capture is being done through compostie inputs, but I never had any problems with this is Pinnacle 8. Like I said there are no frames dropped. I have tried everything I can think of and have had no luck. Can some one with more knowledge than me please help.

This is a very common phenomenon when dealing with low-cost video capture devices.

The reason this happens is you typically use one device to capture video (your AIW) and another to capture audio (your sound card). Both devices have seperate clocks so it is basically impossible to have perfect sync between audio and video.

However, better software video capture programs are aware of this inherent sync problem and compensate for it. What are you using as a capture program?

I am using the onboard sound card which is on a Shuttle SN41G2, it is a Nvidia chipset. I am using Sony Vegas Movie Studio 4. I never had this issue with Pinnacle Studio 8. I also dont have this problem when I capture with my DV camera. What would you say is a better software video capture program. Do you have any recommendation on how I can get around this problem, resynce the audio video or do some other compensation for it?

I'd suggest looking at Intervideo products, like WinDVR 3 or WinDVD Recorder. I downloaded a demo copy of WinDVR 3 and found it to be the ONLY software I ever tried that could capture analog video from my Leadtek TV tuner/capture card and produce an in-sync DVD.

If Pinnacle 8 works for you, I guess you can use that as your capture program.

Personally, I like iuVCR (http://www.iulabs.com/iuvcr/index.shtml) for capture but unfortunately it is not free.

To fix sync problems, I would get familiar with VirtualDub (http://www.virtualdub.org) which is free.

I was using ULEAD when I started using this Sony. I hated ULEAD. While I was at Comp USA I had to make a decision to buy Pin or Sony. I had video/Audio sync problems for two weeks. It was recommended I buy a Fire Wire to capture. I haven't had a problem since. I am glad I decided to buy the Sony software.
