AudioVideo Sync in VidCap

Treadlin wrote on 4/4/2002, 5:03 PM
I am having a problem getting my video and audio to capture in sync. I'm capturing from my Hi8 through my ATI AllInWonder Radeon using VidCap 3... 720 X 480, no dropped frames. When I add the captured clip to VV3 the two streams start out in sync but by the end of the 8 min. clip are out of sync, and the audio stream appears to be about .25 to .5 seconds longer than the video! If anyone has ideas about what to do I would really appreciate any help.

This is a problem with the ATI capture hardware. There's not much you can do about it while you're capturing. However, after you've got the clip in Vegas:

1) Click on the clip to select it
2) U to ungroup
3) Ctrl-drag the end of the audio clip to match the length/speed of the video
4) Shift click on the video clip to select it with the audio
5) G to group them back together.

It may not be perfect, but it will probably be close enough to be usable.

You may want to try setting the Video to be the master stream on the Capture Preferences tab.

Yes, that was my first thought too... didn't make any difference. Can VidCap use any other CODECs? I don't see any place to change to something else like mpeg.

Ahhhh... my 15-year-old son (know-it-all) was trying to tell me to apply an audio fx that would stretch (negatively) the audio but this looks like it did just that! Thanks very much for the detailed help. Now to make a test render to see if it worked goodnuf!

Maybe ATI has a better driver now, though this one is pretty recent.

It's hard to say. My Rage Fury Pro card came with a driver disc dated 4 years ago, which was before the Fury line even came out. I went to their website to get newer drivers, and the file i downloaded had the exact same revision number as what came on the CD. *sigh*

I've loaded the latest BETA drivers now and it is almost perfectly synch'd. Thanks again for steering me in the right direction!

Treadlin,

I have an AIW, too! I have been pretty successful at manually synchronizing the audio with the video. But, obviously, I would like it sync'd to begin with. What version and date were these Beta drivers?

Treadlin,

Problem solved. I search the web for dicussion groups on this same issue and found one that said they tried ATI MMC 7.5 and it solved their audio sync problem. I went out to ATI's site, but they did not have it listed for my card (ATI AIW Rage 128 Pro), but I did find v7.6 when referencing the latest Radeon AIW cards. I tried it and my audio sync is perfect. Click Here to download the program. It's 14.8MB so I hope you have a fast connection.

I recommend using the capture in the ATI MMC over VidCap with the ATI products.

BTW - It also fixed, in conjunction with an updated sound driver, some crackling noises I have been getting since upgrading to Windows XP.

I had a similar problem with my AIW Radeon. However, my out of sync was not due to the latest drivers (of which I had), I was getting a delay because of my virus software. I turned it off temporarily (ALT-CONTROL-DEL) and everything worked fine and was in-sync when capturing.

Right, you should make sure that apps like virus software are NOT running in the background. This goes for email programs, too, since they'll ping a server every now and then.

I have to recant my statements that MMC 7.6 resolves the Audio Sync issue. Although it works somewhat better (Very good for short captures), it still has a sync problem most noteably on longer captures. For example, a 5 minute capture from my TV tuner resulted in synced video, but a 30 min capture from a composite source resulted in Audio lagging.

I have found that ungrouping the audio and video and then streching the audio to the end of the video syncs up fine. Make sure you have the "Maintain Pitch" checkbox checked.

Oh well, maybe someday ATI will get it right! Until I buy a Canpus ADVC-100, I will use this method. BTW - I capture to uncompressed avi at 720x480 in ATI MMC. In VV3 I fix the audio sync and brightness/contrast of video, cut the unwanted beginning and end, Apply a crop to remove the garble video on the bottom of the screen, and then render to NTSC DV AVI format. This reduces a 35GB 30 min capture to about 6.4GB. I work with this footage my my final project.

Not sure why, but my audio got worse again with snaps, crackles & pops. However, I think I have it fixed.

After removing the Creative SB Live card from my system to rule it out, I enabled my onboard VIA AC97 audio and updated to latest v2.20 audio driver. The audio from the capture in ATI MMC was even worse.

I had not used the Vegas VidCap program since installing VV3a because of things I heard about it and the AIW cards, so I thought I would give it a try now. Guess what? No crackles. I have not captured a large enough file to see if the sync problem is resolved or not, but the short capture I did was right on.

I will keep you posted. Can't do a large capture tonight because I'm rendering a large project already.
