In the Advanced Capture tab of VidCap, you can *manually* log tape information (name, clip, rating, comments, etc., and timecode is automatically recorded) without capturing. A helpful thread for me was:

(See the post from SonicEPM)

I haven't tried to do an "automatic" logging - I prefer to review the tape as I log it, even though I'm not capturing. I assume that by "automatic clip logging", you mean that you want to let the tape roll and log clips and timecode while you're doing other things. I don't believe that VidCap has this function, but I could be wrong - I'm finding new ways to do things every time I fire up VV..

GG,

Thanks, I checked that already. Unfortunately it does it very strangely and it makes it hard to work with/print.

Any chance of getting this on a new feature list SF?

i.e. DV Tape cataloger. You are almost there with the VidCap using the TapeCapture, just take the first image of the scene, use that as your icon (instead of the film icon for offline clips) and put it in your media pool just like you do with offline clips. Then all you need to do is select a few, click batch capture and bingo. Quick and easy assembly of archived clipes on DV Tape. Very nice feature!

Dream on....eh?

So I like to dream.....Can you blame me? Hell, if I didn't dream a little I wouldn't be where I am today Errr.....hmmmmm....economic slowdown = tight finances.....errrr...scratch that! ;-)

I will post something on the suggestion list. Seriously though, it doesn't appear to be that much of a stretch from what they have already with vidcap. It is nearly there.

Thanks for the replies.

Ok. I went ahead and posted the suggestion, along with an additional simple(?) request. When capturing clips, set the date, time and other information in the file attributes so it can be seen by Windows XP.

Right now, only dimension and frame rate are added. Boy, it would be REAL handy to have the file dates match the clip timestamp on the DV tape!

Here I go again....Sorry

How about CatDV? That program *may* do what you are wanting.

JetDV,

Thanks for the suggestion. I started to take a look at it but it wants me to install all this extra stuff, which I am paranoid about doing. Especially if I end up not using the program. So many programs these days pee all over your registry and system and never clean up after themselves.

I have had to reformat my hard drive several times because of these "trials" I go through. When I get a few moments I will look into this a little closer. Sounds interesting. I did come up with a workable solution, however.

I am using Movie Maker which comes with Windows XP and it will capture immediately to any compression setting I want. So, I take the absolute tightest compression I can get to and I capture the whole tape. I can get an hour and a half in 120MB. I then use this as my catalog. So far I have captured 16 tapes and it only takes 1.4GB. It keeps the collection files around with all of the information I need at my fingertips....when the scene was taped, how long, starting and ending points. Then I use this information when actually capturing the movies from VV3 VidCap using the timecodes. Seems to be pretty nice. The only bad point is that I can't print it out and get a hardcopy index. RATS!

Anyway, thanks for your reply. I will take a look at it and let you know.

Kind Regards,
JavaNut
