Automatic Ripple with Trimmer

I'm trying to switch to Vegas 6.0 from another editing program, and can't get the trimmer to properly work...
Simple situation:
3-4 events on a timeline, and I want to insert an event. I open the event in the trimmer, set my in-out points, make sure auto-rippling is enabled, then click the "add media from cursor" button.
The trimmed clip will then appear on the active timeline, but usually overwrites the clip just downstream of it. Usually, but not always. Sometimes, it'll insert the clip (plus a couple extra seconds of space) in the timeline and move everything down.
"Ah Ha!" I exclaim, "almost got it!" So, I click the undo keys, and redo the steps EXACTLY like I just did, and we are back to overwrite mode. I have tried everything I can think of, and can't figure it out. Any help out there?

OK. Over-writing isn't a problem, because you can drag things into correct sequence. However what I do in this case is open the clips on the timeline (at the point required for insertion, auto ripple enabled) by pushing clips to the right. Put cursor at required insertion point (on timeline). Now do your thing in the trimmer and proceed as you have done. Now you can drag the clips back to close up the gap (or push them out, as need be). I'm sure there's a quicker way to do this and someone will tell you, but I find fewer mistakes with this incremental approach (perhaps why I don't have problems with auto-ripple).
