Automating volume envelpes with a control surface

I have connected a new Evolution UC-33 control surface and have "installed" it in Vegas. I can raise and lower the track levels and control the pans. I can also start, stop, etc. Vegas using the transport keys.

What I can not get it to do is to actually create an on-the-fly volume envelope. I have tried to follow the steps given in the Vegas help files but am now frustrated that I can't get it to work.

I need to have this work with eight tracks that I record on a Korg 888 and transfer the wave files directly to Vegas for editing and then mastering in SF.

Your help is much appreciated.

In order for the UC-33 to control the envelopes, it must be put into "automation mode".

This is done by assigning a button on the UC-33 to toggle automation mode on and off.

This is done in the Generic Control surface device preferences page.

- Open the Configure Generic Control dialog.
- In the View function group: combo box, select "Assign"
- Locate the "Toggle Automation Mode" host command and select it.
- Assign the button on the UC-33 that you want to control this. You can do this manually or you can have the driver "Learn" the command. (This is described in the only help.)

When this is properly configured, press this button and all of the automatable controls you have assigned to the UC-33 will be in automation mode. You can record automation moves then based upon the settings of the tracks and busses in Vegas.

Note that the tracks and busses in Vegas do not have to show the automation controls. They are indepedent from any external surface device. Another way of putting this is that the GUI settings for individual tracks and busses do not affect the global automation mode of the surface or visa versa.

Thank you, Peter. I will try your steps tomorrow after church when I copy my wave files to my laptop and begin editing.

Out of curiosity, what UC-33 preset did you use with Vegas? I've tried presets 31-33 (generic presets), but can't get the number pad to toggle mute/solo.
