AVCHD Concern

I have been editing with Vegas since Vegas 4.0. I took the plunge into the tapless world and purchased the Panasonic HDC-TM300 camcorder. I was going to upgrade from Vegas 6.0 to Vegas 9c, but have concerns about posts I read indicating Vegas 9 doesn't work effectively with AVCHD files. I would be most grateful for any recommendations.

I think alot of the problems are just having enough computer horsepower for playback. I edit on a quad core with 8.0 and don't have any problems other than at edit points it sometimes hickups.

If your computer is too slow or you have some other problems with AVCHD, you can get NeoScene for around $100. It is a lossless conversion that playback really well, but the files are much bigger.

I Have the Panasonic SD100, & my AVCHD files work well with VP9...

I'm very pleased with my little cam... I got it , to see what working with AVCHD files was like.. & I don't forsee going back to tape for acquasition anymore, unless absolutely neccessary.....

I just got a Sony XR500V. I'm running Vegas 9.0b under Win7 64 with 8 gigs of ram on a i5-750 Intel CPU with Gigabyte P55 motherboard. I thought this would be enough to run the AVCHD smoothly in preview at full frame rate at least on "Preview auto" -- but it isn't for full HD 1920 x 1080. Transitions are very choppy! Using track motion is another killer.

Of course there are many different settings to improve things but I've tried them all and I can't get the smoothness of using Vegas with SD that I was used to. I think the best answer is an even faster CPU. The next best is Cineform or some file conversion setup that gives you files that Vegas will run smoothly. I'm still working on which one to use. I've heard that 8.0c runs AVCHD better and some say that 9.0c also runs AVCHD better than 9.0b ...

It would be nice to hear if anyone is running smooth with native MTS files (even through transitions) on an i5-750? And under which Vegas version and using which settings for 1920 x 1080 NTSC.?

Vegan 9.0c definitively runs AVCHD much better than 9.0b. Especially transitions from clip to clip are now perfect. I can run crossfades of two AVCDH tracks in real time and full resolution.

I'm on Win7 (64bit), QuadCore Qx9650@3,8GHz and 8Gbyte of 1600MHz DDR3 memory. This setup (even if now 2 years old) should be of similar horsepower than an i5-750...

Yep. Went back to 9.0c for AVCHD and VIOLA !! She works! My i5-750 runs it very smooth on Preview Auto even with some track motion going. Of course, this is a small 5 min project with not much in it but it RUNS very smooth in 9.0c (even the track motion) whereas 9.0b was really tough -- pretty much not useable.

So I still have the problem of using jpegs and pngs in 9.0c. See this thread. I recently had to roll back to 9.0b to finish something. Going back to 9.0b

Hopefully 9.0d will get it completely together but it appears that my i5-750 runs AVCHD just fine ! Feeling better!
