Most of my event stuff, like plays and recitals are SD. I just want to make sure I can rerender for SD. Or I guess, I can shoot in SD, but what would I rerender it as?

Thanks:) I am going to build a new computer and was looking at the core i7 2.66GB. Is that a good chip for editing AVCHD?

AVCHD works great on my office system (HP xw 8400 workstation, dual dual-core Xeon @ 2.66mHz) and even better on my home system Core i5 (home built for less than 1/4 the cost).

I ALWAYS shoot and edit in HD (AVCHD or HDV) and render out to whatever format I need -- usually standard DVD. I switched to HD after observing that Sony's least expensive 1st generation single-chip consumer HDV camcorder produced a much better looking standard-def DVD than either my VX-2000 or Canon XL-1.

For my last project I created a standard-def DVD and also a high-def DVD (burned to a regular DVD-R disk, not a blu-ray) using DVD Architect. The standard-def and high-def files were both rendered from the same Vegas timeline, and both files rendered quickly on my work system.
