AVCHD import problem

Whipping Brady wrote on 1/29/2008, 8:37 AM
I am currently using Vegas Pro 8b with my Sony HDR-SR1. until today, I have never had a problem with using AVCHD. I recently shot a wedding. My camcorder shows it as one file (63). My computer shows it as 4 different files (0062.MTS, 0063.MTS, 0064.MTS, & 0065.MTS). I'm assuming this is because the video is 45 minutes long. My problem is with 00062.MTS. When I try to import it, it recognizes it as an mpeg stereo, audio only file. So, essentially I have the first 15 minutes of the wedding as audio only. I'm pretty sure the bride and groom woun't be happy with only the audio of the first 15 mins. Anyone else had this problem? Anyone know how to fix this? Like I said, I can watch the whole video on the camcorder.

Thanks for the replys. I used the sony software and imported the file. As a, now, m2ts file it works perfectly.

I think your problem is you are trying to import the original .mts-file(s) directly into Vegas. But if your recording exceed a certain time the camera will automatically split the files. The file system on the camera's harddisc does not allow a file to be bigger than 2 GB and the file structure of each single 2 GB isn't closed yet. You should NOT use such files in any other application except the camera itself!

What you need to do in this case is using the Sony Picture Motion Browser (this is the import tool which is delivered with every Sony AVCHD camera) to import the files. This tool automatically joins the files and close the structure. Imported this way Vegas will handle the file (as one single file) just fine (and it will be .m2ts instead of .mts then).

Hope this helps.

Interesting...

Not disagreeing- but I can happily import said mts files into my Vegas. I didn't want to install any extras software at all, so have not even installed picture motion browser on any install. Yet they all read the mts stuff fine. All shows up full 5.1 audio, back to back files work a treat.
(note: HDR-SR5e - might be enough to make difference)

I would really appreciate others' thoughts on this.

Yes, in most cases you can import such files into Vegas and you can be happy if they work just fine. But if there are any problems with original .mts files the first try ever should be using Sony Picture Motion Browser and .m2ts converted files instead. I tested this with Sony SR1, UX1, SR5 and SR7.
Problems must not occur but maybe do occur and if they do you should be save using Picture Motion Browser imported files. I had lots of problems in various apps with original .mts-files with each of those cameras (if files were splitted to fit the 2 GB limit) but no problem at all after having imported and joined the files using Picture Motion Browser.
So I think just give it a try.

Marco,
Have you ever had the problem of the .m2ts file, once imported into V8, freezing up? When i import the clip, it imports and i see the video and the audio track and i can click on the video and see it in the preview window but when i press play to actually preview the clip it does nothing.

What are your system specs especially the power of your CPU?

This just might be symantecs but you say that you import MTS files. I have the HDR-SR8 HDD cam and when the files import they are M2TS files. I wonder what the difference is.

Should be no issue as AVCHD is also my main codec. What Vegas Pro 13 build do you use?

There is nothing that i can do without updating vegas ?

dxdy wrote on 12/30/2016, 8:49 AM

Use the Mediainfo program (free!) to understand the format of your video file. It will show the codecs that were used. Post the information here so we can help you more. Has the file been modified in Playmemories? I would guess you don't have a codec on your system. Did this problem just suddenly start?

This might help you out:

The file exited from the cam like .MTS and now it's .Mt2s... I'm trying to install Vegas Pro 14 this will fix?

dxdy wrote on 12/30/2016, 9:56 AM

I don't know whether 14 will handle it any better than 13. We will have a better idea if you follow the suggestion I made above, post the Mediainfo information for the .Mt2s file.

All is working SMOOTHLY and PERFECT with Sony Vegas Pro 14 THE ORIGINAL MTS too

Vegas Pro 14 is no longer 'Sony's, but now it is 'Magix's :)

I don't think that it has been said explicitly here and therefore may confuse some people, but Sony Picture Motion Browser has been replaced by Sony PlayMemories Home. They are essentially the same thing. In addition to concatenating the parts of a long shoot, the transferred files are renamed to shooting time and date, which I find handy.

If you have already copied your MTS files to your computer and lost your original AVCHD file structure in your camera, you will no longer be able to use either Sony transfer software. In this case, you can concatenate the parts of a scene, that have been split, into a single file in various ways. One way is to use the command:

COPY /B File1.MTS+File2.MTS+File3.MTS CompleteFile.m2ts.

A less tedious way is to use the free GUI, Igorware File Joiner to do the concatenation.

Don't use software that has been designed to join separate intact video files, because that is not what we have here.

Note that Sony cameras cut long shoots up into 2GB chunks, with a probable smaller chunk at the end (max. 32 bit signed integer), whereas Panasonic cameras produce 4GB chunks (max 32 bit unsigned integer). Having copied all your MTS files to your computer, sort them according to file size and any that are about 2GB (4GB resp.) are candidates for parts of a split shoot that need to be concatenated. Panasonic provides software to transfer MTS files but it does not concatenate the chunks, which I consider to be outrageous!

The concatenation problem here is analogous to joining the VOB files from a DVD title set into a single MPEG2 file , and the two concatenation processes above are also suitable for this task.
