AVCHD --> Internet, I need advice

This topic is often discussed here,sp please excuse me for taking it up again.. I have 1920x1080i 50fps video ready for publishing. I have rendered it for DVD, using the DVDA template, and it looks great on my TV. Now I want to publish it on the Internet. I have my own web server, so I have full freedom to choose the format (no You Tube re-rendering will be made).

What format should I use? What steps? Should I just embed the Windows media player on the website and use WMV? Use FLV? Mp4?

Any help appreciated.

Knowing your audience would help in making the decision -

1. What kind of download bandwidth will they have?
2. Which platform will they be running on? Will they be able to decode the codecs you use?

Based on these questions I'd run a couple of quick renders and see which format produces good output and use that I guess.

Ok, fair enough.

However, there exist a "standard", I am sure. I am often puzzled by online video published by newspapers. Online newspapers will probably reach a large audience, so I think the format (codec) used will match most user PC specs.

They have 16:9 video which starts almost instantly, plays back without any hick-cups or jerkiness, and the video is sharp, crisp and clear, way better than the You Tube typical quality.
So, how do they do this?

Most of the videos you are referring to are Flash video. There is likely a workaround with another encoder but I use Adobe Flash Encoder to create a 700kb video stream that plays nicely on a cable or DSL connection.

I first create the videos in Vegas in a widescreen MOV format - usually at 1280x 720 resolution. Then in Flash encoder, I resize the video to 640 x 360. From there I just create the webpage in Dreamweaver (cuz its easier...) then upload the files to the server.

A good example of the playback is on my website's video archive page:
