AVCHD MTS Codecs

I'm field testing a Cannon HG10 for our PAC and thought it would be a breeze to just shoot to hard drive then drag the files over to my PC and then Vegas. Problem is Vegas won't accept MTS files with my current set up.

The camera came with the typical Ulead DVD and Movie writer software. Am I expected to install these apps in order to get the codec for MTS files?

I'm using Vegas 7e (build 216). I read that 7e is supposed to have support for Sony AVCHD...I'm pretty sure I've got the latest e build (same install file size but I wish they would put the build# in the file name) so maybe the Sony codec I have does not support Canon? I also have the latest FFDshow installed.

I can play the videos with NeroShowtime, but not Windows Media Player.

Anyone with this camera or similar using Vegas 7e?
I'm all ears....thanks.

I have a Canon HG 10 and HF 10, I had to upgrade to Vegas pro 8 as the canon AVCHD wasn’t supported by pro 7

XFX, have you noticed any drawbacks to editing AVCHD? What kind of PC horsepower are you using for that?

7e was the first version out for avchd..... and it's pretty bad. You should upgrade to 8c.... and even with that people are still getting some crashing issues. If you have a 64 bit machine then Vegas 8.1 works even better.

I am using a dual core and a quad core both handle AVCHD ok not great

Drawbacks

1.Audio and visual sinc requires more concentration on some type of cuts
2.Even at best preview you aren’t seeing the best quality so if you colour correct or ad some fx its always slightly out between your visual perceptionn and your output reality

3.file compatibility between other editors so I have to convert content if we are shareing content

None of these though are of such a hectic nature that I would discourage you from using it, like anything ..you develop a feel for it

Thanks for the feedback. From the sound of it, even if I upgrade to 8 I'm still not going to get the same smooth editing I'm experiencing with 7 and my M2T files off my Sony HC1. I only have a AMD4800+ so I think for now my best bet would be to buy VASST AVCHD Upshift which I've tried the demo of. Seems to fly through 10 seconds of video instantly.

Anyone have any experience with Upshift?

Blink, you said 7e should "work" albeit badly? Then why do you suppose I can't get a file to load? Perhaps because it's not a Sony AVCHD?

That's more than likely the issue. Canon and Sony cams use a slightly different avchd type from each other and If I remember correctly when avchd edit first came (which was 7e) it only supported main profile avchd (the sony avchd).
