AVCHD to DVD

From time to time I have the need to give standard definition content to people who do not have any blu ray player.
While the quality of the HD files made with "make movie" (using Sony AVC or Main Concept) is really excellent, when I try to produce standard definition files (AVI or MPG), their quality is worse than the ones I used to obtain by my ten year old standard definition digital camcoder. In "make movie" I tried all available settings (standard definition wide screen), with poor results, mainly for staight lines such as buildings edges. Any suggestions?

Thankyou for your help

In addition to losing 85% of your video information going from HD to SD, the resizing, deinterlacing, and transcoding functions themselves introduce additional losses. Therefore, SD->SD is often sharper than HD->SD. In general, you will get sharper results if your deinterlace method is Interpolate rather than Blend.
