avermedia pci can't capture using vegas?

I have an avermedia pci card that I want to use for capturing from analog sources-mainly VHS. I don't have a problem doing that, but I do have a problem using Vegas to do that. It came bundled with ulead video studio 7 and ulead dvd factory and both of these can capture from the card just fine... except that it captures to mpeg-2 or mpeg-1 which would be fine if I wanted to edit using that program, but I prefer to use Vegas.
When I try to utilize the capture card in Vegas, I can select it but it gives me a message that says "the device 'AVerMedia, MPEG EZMaker (88x)' coudl not be opened. Please make sure that it is turned on and is not being used by another application or user.

Is there a way to utilize the card and capture using Vegas or do I just need to shell out some more money for a card I know will work with Vegas.
Thanks,
j razz

I've used the WinTV cards from Hauppauge with Vegas VidCap and successfully captured uncompressed AVI. You can probably find the "WinTV Go" on ebay for under $20. I would suggest not using the driver disc that comes with the card. Go to the Hauppauge website and download the latest version of the driver there.

ATI Rage cards with video input use the same chip as the WinTV cards and work adequately well, as long as you don't use ATI's software for capturing.

I know you'd like to do it from within Vegas but the Avermedia PCI card works great with free capture programs such as VirtualVCR and iuVCR (with lots of great options) .

Trock,
will "VirtualVCR" or "iuVCR" allow me to output to .avi? If I can capture it in .avi uncompressed and import that into Vegas, I will be happy:). If I can't I guess I will bid on one of the cards on ebay that I am watching.
Thanks
