You might have non-compliant avi or mpeg files, an vv3 refuses to read them.
See http://www.vcdhelp.com/
Also, for reading Mpeg you must have the plug-in installed (payable).

Not that this will help you any , but I've encountered a similiar problem trying to work in SF's Viscosity program. I'll try to open an avi. or mpg. that'll play fine in Vegas , but I get the same error message you got. I found that after rendering the files in vegas using the "uncompressed" setting, they'd play fine in Viscosity. Pretty weird, but it sounds like the same problem you have. If you can lay hands on another video editing program that'll play your files, try rendering them w/uncompressed settings and I'll bet they play in vegas.

Vegas will open any .avi it creates, and it should also open any MPEG file it can create, except for MPEG-2 elementary streams, so my guess is that some other app has created these files.

Where did these files come from (what app)?

Can you load both/either of these files in Media Player? If so, what are the file properties, including codec?

I had a simillar problem opening .avi files captured in VideoWave. I used this free little converting program to convert them to a Microsoft DV (AVI 2) and then they work fine in VV. Go here for a free download. http://www.canopuscorp.com/products/fileconv.php3
