Where did you capture the avi files from? It could well be that you used a 3rd party capture tool that inserted its own codec to the stream, or contains data that Vegas can't recognize. That's rare, but not unknown. AVID files don't open in Vegas, for instance.
Capture with Vidcap, you won't have this problem.
