AVI Audio Missing

Hi, I have VideoFactory 2.0c (most updated & with MPEG plugin) yet most (not all) of my AVI files will not give me audio when I try adding them to my projects. When I hilight them, the attribs in the explorer pane say "Stream attributes could not be determined" for the audio. I've tried using VirtualDub to split the audio off and re-encode it into the video, but doesn't work unless I use uncompressed WAV/PCM, and then I get sync errors. My question is: Is there a way to get VideoFactory to use all the codecs on my system or is there at least a plug-in pack I can download somewhere ('cause there sure ain't one on Sonic Foundry's homepage that I've been able to find).

"Stream attributes could not be determined" basically means the codec cannot be found. What did you compress the audio with? MP3?.

Note: You may be able to play the file in Windows Media Player since Windows Media Player uses both DirectShow filters and codecs while VF seems to only use the codecs listed in the Multimedia Control Panel. Hmmm, maybe I should shoot off a product suggestion about this.

Are your AVI's encoded as DIVX files?

I tried encoding in MP3, yes. I can't remember if i tried some other ones. I might have even tried uncompressed PCM (WAV), but I'm not sure. I know I did try ripping the WAV off and adding it in separately, and that worked (although the sync was WAY out). Thanks for the info about the codecs.

Yes, they are... but isn't the DivX codec for the video and NOT the audio? My AVI's use MP3 compression. Maybe I'm wrong? Perhaps you know something I don't. Does the DivX Codec include audio AND video?

The AVI is one file, which both video and audio have been handled by the Divx codec. I have been seeing a lot of reports of people unable to play audio from an AVI. After further information is provided, it is discovered they are usually DIVX files. Divx is not an AVI file. It only uses the AVI extension. It is a variation of an MPEG4 codec.

I don't know why the audio doesn't work, but like I said, I am seeing this problem reported a lot in relation to Divx files.

I noticed that VF uninstalls my Faunhofer "Professional" MP3 codec for some odd reason (I swear some MS products do the same thing as well). Reinstall your MP3 codecs to regain functionality.
